The Iran-Iraq War killed around 1.5 million people. Imagine how many lives would have been spared if Ayatollah Khomeini and Saddam Hussein had found a better way to resolve their disagreements. This is (of course) not to say that any solution other than needlessly delivering so many lives to the reaper could have been any worse.
