Pro-tip: a lot of the sexist verses are in the fourth chapter of the Quran called The Women (in case the heading didn’t give it away).
I made today’s cartoon as a recommendation for those who find themselves in the unenviable position of reading the Quran to a daughter whom they wish to grow up with confidence and self-respect.
I think I will one day be a good father and forego the whole Abrahamic mythology all together. I’d be much prouder if my daughter could quote visionaries, scientists and philosophers from around the world. Personally, I find that the works of Rumi (for example) are far more beautiful and thought-provoking than the Quran. Rumi’s poetry has the added benefit of coming from a much more interesting and colorful historical context (and one which we actually know something about)!
Meanwhile, the The Holy Quran (as interpreted by the talented Yusuf Ali) teaches us:
Allah (thus) directs you as regards your Children’s (Inheritance): to the male, a portion equal to that of two females: if only daughters, two or more, their share is two-thirds of the inheritance; if only one, her share is a half.
I know, I would not want to tell my daughter that either. The good news is, most people don’t even read the damn thing!
