Whether it’s a simple trip to the grocery store or a day at the beach, Muslim women (or more accurately, women in Muslim cultures) cannot simply fall into the ease and luxury of such simple things.
As you may already know, Islam requires women to dress “modestly” (which simply means that the female body should be seen as little as possible). The implication being that an otherwise innocuous vacation might well become a chore rather than a relaxing endeavor.
Islam mandates that when a girl undergoes puberty it is time to “veil” her from the world. To make the transition for their poor daughters less horrifying, Muslim parents often introduce the hijab at a much younger age than what is mandated so that girls go into their preteen-years already accustomed to this strange and alienating tradition.
There can be no dispute–the hijab is intended to keep women naive and unaware and with as little influence as possible in the world which they per-force have to live.
Thus, in honor of all women who have, or still have to struggle with veiling themselves from the world, I submit this week’s comic. The doodle this time is not intended to be funny or light-heated, but rather, upsetting to Islamic establishments–wherever they may be. I mean to ask them one simple question: how far behind the times do you intend (or wish) to fall and how much laughter from the non-Islamic world can you bear before quietly admitting the backwardness of bagging up the women in your dominions?
It breaks my heart that I, with my outspoken nature and simple cartoons, can change nothing overnight (and will not). However, every drop in the bucket helps. Eventually, said bucket might become weighty enough to douse the mighty flames of religious ignorance. Until that day comes, I will do my small part and ridicule the ancient religions which people feel obliged to follow for reasons I wish to never understand again.
